coyotesTo the right is a coyote in California. The difference is that here in Nebraska, they often run in packs. On a night last month, my friend Mike (Mouse) Allman, ran out of his farmhouse to see a pack of 12 to 15 of them trying to get at Jack Kalina's horses. Unfortunately for two of the coyotes, Mouse had grabbed his gun when he launched out the door. The problem is that there are too many and they are coming in too close. Predators act based on food supply. In the old days, when the number was considered to be out of control, bounties were offered, a specified amount of money for each, usually based on set of ears but in 1959 based on scalps.

The article generated a variety of comments, none supportive of the coyotes -- probably because the balance of nature is currently heavy with coyotes.

Back when I was a kid, before 1965, I remember my dad sternly telling us do not walk in certain water ways on our farm north of Burchard a few miles. He had put cyanide guns out in the waterways and baited the coyotes, so they would eat whatever it was he put on them and shoot them through the jaw and kill them. |
